Budgeting 101: essential tips to save money this winter

Winter warmth network: save money with winter

As colder months approach, winter can often lead to unexpected expenses. With the right planning, however, you can manage your budget effectively and ensure you stay financially resilient during this season. Here are some essential tips to help you save money this winter.

1. Maximise energy efficiency

One of the most effective ways to cut down on winter expenses is by reducing your energy consumption. Simple steps like draught-proofing your windows, using energy-efficient bulbs, and setting your thermostat a degree lower can make a significant difference over time.

Tip: Many local energy providers including LEAP, SHINE, and National Energy Action offer free advice or home energy efficiency checks. On the Lightning Reach portal, you can access grants from these organisations to help with energy-saving improvements.

2. Seek out support with heating costs

Heating bills often skyrocket in winter, but there are various forms of financial support available to help you manage. The Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payments are government-backed schemes designed to support households during colder months. You may also be eligible for Charis’ Park Homes Warm Home Discount if you live in a park home. Explore these options early and get the help you need to manage rising heating costs throughout the winter.

Read Mary’s story here, who received £150 in energy support alongside a new washing machine and fridge freezer and £250 in vouchers for bedding, food, and clothing from Charis and Lightning Reach.

3. Plan your budget early to save money

Winter brings with it additional expenses, such as holiday spending and home maintenance costs. Start by outlining a clear budget for the next few months, prioritising essentials such as heating and groceries.

Tip: If you need some extra help with food this winter head over to your local foodbank. You can get a voucher from your GP, social worker, health visitor, or Citizens Advice and hand it into your nearest Trussell Trust foodbank for three days of emergency food. There may be other food banks locally which don’t require vouchers; e.g. churches or community organisations.
